The Octurn quartet will play music in alternating response to the silent projections of Nathaniel Dorsky’s films on Wednesday, November 27th, 2013 at 8 pm.
Almost a year ago, Octurn approached me with the idea of playing live music to my silent films. I was not happy with this idea at all. I know that it is in fashion these days to do just that, more often to films from the silent period of film history. I have experienced this and with almost always the same results. The cinema is reduced to a visual ornament and cannot be fully felt, and the music itself cannot be fully appreciated. I certainly did not want this for my films and never would.
I proposed to them a challenge that I frankly did not think they would take up. I suggested that they project my films silently, as they were intended, and then respond to the film by playing music without the film, perhaps in the dark. Then another film would be projected silently and then they would respond once again. This alternation could happen a number of times. I thought this would make for a more difficult, but a more rewarding evening. And this, indeed, is what will be happening.
